PDE and Applied Mathematics Seminar

Spring 2016

Organized by Dmitry Golovaty and Peter Gordon

March 8 (Applied Math Lab, 2:30-3:30 pm) Artem Zvavitch (Kent State University) will speak on "Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities for different measures."

Abstract: In this talk we will discuss Brunn-Minkowski inequality (on the volume of Minkowski sum of two sets) and its offsprings. The inequality is one the most important inequalities in mathematics and have numerous applications in Analysis, Geometry and Probability, we will briefly discuss some of such applications (such as isoperimetric inequality, Brunn's theorem, concentration inequality). Next we will move to the properties of general log-concave measures (i.e. measures, with log-concave density) and present a number of classical and new facts about such measures and convex sets. We will also discuss a number of interesting open problems.

March 17 (CAS 220D, 1:00-2:30 pm) Artem Zvavitch (Kent State University) will continue to speak on "Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities for different measures."
